SS Princess Sophia was a steel-built passenger liner in the coastal service fleet of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). Along with SS Princess Adelaide, SS Princess Alice, and SS Princess Mary, Princess Sophia was one of four similar ships built for CPR during 1910-1911  

 

프린세스 소피아. 여객선 이 침몰한건데, 상당히 비참하고  안타까운 사건인데, 답이 없는 상황이었던듯. 

 

On 25 October 1918, Princess Sophia[5] sank with the loss of all aboard after grounding on Vanderbilt Reef in Lynn Canal near Juneau, Territory of Alaska.[6] All 364 persons on the ship died, making the wreck of Sophia the worst maritime accident in the history of British Columbia and Alaska  

 

1918년 10월 25일 에 침몰. 린 커넬 의 밴더빌트 리프 에서 그라운딩. 리프 가 암초 산호 사주 바위 인거고, 그라운딩 이 배가 얹힌거야. 린커넬 저곳이 아주 험한 곳이고. 

 

Lynn Canal is an inlet (not an artificial canal) into the mainland of southeast Alaska.

Lynn Canal runs about 90 miles (140 km) from the inlets of the Chilkat River south to Chatham Strait and Stephens Passage. At over 2,000 feet (610 m) in depth, Lynn Canal is the deepest fjord in North America (outside Greenland) and one of the deepest and longest in the world.  

 

린 커넬. 인공 운하 가 아니라, 알라스카 남동부 의 인렛, 해안가 협곡 바다지역. 90마일. 깊이가 610미터, 북미에서 가장 깊은 피요르드 , 세계에서 가장 깊고 긴 곳 중 하나. 

 

 

저 긴 협공 에 밴더빌트 리프 암초바위가 있는거고. 

 

저 끝에 헤인즈 Haines 위에 스캐그 웨이 Skagway 에서 출발해서, 주노 Jueau 에 가는길에 저기에 걸린건데. 

 

벤쿠버 가 종착지고. 얘들 지도가, 웃기게도, 스캐그웨이 에 캣치칸 해변은 알라스카 야. 

 

저배는 저당시 철갑선 의 증기선이고, 졸 장비 좋은 배야. 

 

On 23 October 1918, Princess Sophia departed Skagway, Alaska, at 22:10,..; and Vancouver on 27 October. On board were 75 crew and about 268 passengers, 

 

10월 23일에 스캐그웨이 출발해서, 여기저기 항구 들러서 27일 벤쿠버 인데. 크루 75명, 승객 268명, 합계 343명.

 

다죽었어. 주위에 구조하려는 배들 이 널렸는데. 

 

유일한 생존자.  

The English Setter is a medium-size breed of dog. It is part of the setter group, which includes the red Irish Setters, Irish Red and White Setters,

and at 02:00 on 24 October 1918, Princess Sophia struck ground hard on Vanderbilt Reef, 54 miles (87 km) south of Skagway  

 

1918년 10월 24일 새벽 2시. 에 저기에 얹힌건데. 

 

One of the last distress messages, at 5:20pm by wireless operator David Robinson, stated, "For God's sake hurry, the water is coming into my room".[17] Aware that Princess Sophia had weak wireless batteries, Cedar wired the passenger linke "We are coming. Save your batteries." Princess Sophia's operator radioed back: "Alright I will. You talk to me so I know you are coming." This was the last wireless message from Princess Sophia.  

 

마지막 긴급 메세지가, 다음날 25일 오후 5시 20분. 무선사 데이빗 로빈슨, 신이여 서둘러, 물이 내방에 들어와. 소피아 호 의 무선 바테리가 약했다. 구조선 씨다, 가 , 우리가 간다, 바테리 아껴라. 회신, 그러겠다. 너 나한테 말해서 나는 안다 너가 오는걸. 이것이 마지막 무선 교신. 

 

바로 저 직후 침몰. 

 

When Ledbetter arrived at 20:00 on 24 October he found three large vessels, including the fishing schooner King and Winge which had arrived at 18:20 and about fifteen smaller fishing vessels at the scene, arriving towards the evening on the 24th.  

 

24일 저녁에, 큰 배 인, 레드베터, 킹, 윈지 세척 도착. 15척의 작은 낙시배들도 도착. 주위에 배들이 저리 있는데도, 모두 죽은거야. 

 

While there had been many shipwrecks and groundings over the years, and it was the rare vessel that did not run aground or have some problem of this nature, two shipwrecks would have been foremost in the minds of Captain Locke and his officers, as well as other senior captains and officers among the rescue vessels, like Captains Ledbetter of Cedar and Miller of King & Winge. These two wrecks, of Clallam in 1904 and Princess May in 1910, showed well the dilemma faced by Captain Locke in making a decision whether to evacuate Princess Sophia.  

 

원래 저지역이 배 난파로 유명했다, 이런 문제를 겪지 않는 배가 거의 없었는데, 가장 알려진 사건이, 두 개 이전에 있었고, 캡튼 로크 와 승무원들도 숙지한 상태였고.

At about 3:30 p.m., when the ship seemed as if it could not long stay afloat, Captain Roberts ordered the lifeboats lowered, and into them placed mostly women and children, but apparently no officers from the ship to command the boats, although four crewman and a passenger who was an experienced merchant officer went in the first boat. All three boats capsized or failed to properly launch, drowning all aboard them.[2][3] Many of the men remaining on board watched their wives and children drown. One man was on his wedding trip. His bride drowned  

 

클라람 배 난파는 아래 밴쿠버 쪽 해안인데, 배에 물들어오고 침몰할듯해서, 선장이 구명보트 를 내려라, 대부분 여자들과 아이들을 태웠어. 보트 세척인데, 저걸 물에 내려야 하는데, 누구하나 내리라고 명령하지 않아, 첫번째 보트엔 4명의 선원과 상선 맨도 있었는데. 세 보트가 캡싸이즈, 뒤집어져서, 모두들 물에 빠져 죽었어. 

 

56 people in the boats had drowned, of whom 45 were passengers.  56명이 죽고. 

 

그리곤, 배가 침몰하는데, 

 

saving most or all of the 36 who had remained aboard . 배에 남은 사람들 36명은 바닷물 떠다니다가 다 살은거야 주위 구조선들에 의해. 

 

저 사건이. 소피아호 선장 록크 에게, 의사결정하는데 걸림돌이 된듯 하다 하고. '

 

워낙에 위험하고, 날씨도 안좋고, 선장은 괜찮다 며 확성기로 전하고. 1918년이라 무선장비 도 안좋은거고 당시. 정보교류 에서 오류가 서로 있었다는 둥 하지만. 너무나 위험했던거고, 설마 저게 뒤집어서 침몰될까 했던거도 있겠고  인개가 찐해서 보이지도 않고 잘. 

 

There appears to have been no time for an organized evacuation. Many people wore lifejackets, and two wooden lifeboats floated away (the eight steel lifeboats sank). There were about 100 people still in their cabins when the ship sank. It is hard to know why, if the ship took half an hour to sink, so many people were below decks, but there could be many reasons. It was believed that seawater invaded the ship, the boiler exploded, buckling the deck and killing many people, but divers to the wreck have found all three boilers intact. Oil fuel spilled into the water, choking people who were trying to swim away. Sophia had been equipped with extra flotation devices, on the theory that people could cling to these in the water awaiting rescue. These were worthless, as the cold seawater would kill a swimmer long before rescue could arrive   

 

조직적 구조를 할 시간이 없어보였다. 많은 사람들은 구명보트를 입었고, 두개 목조 구명보트 는 떠다니고 8개 는 가라앉았다. 100명은 배 안 선실에 있었다 배가 가라앉을때. 배가 반시간 동안 침몰하는데 왜 그랬는지 알기 어렵다, 많은 사람들이 데크 아래 있었던 이유를. 그러나 여러 이유가 있을 수 있다. 물이 배로 침범했고, 보일러가 폭발했고, 갑판이 무너지고 많은 사람들이 죽으니까. 그러나 난파할때 다이버들은 모두 보일러 의 화상과 상처를 겪지 않았다. 오일이 바다로 넘치고 바다에 뛰어든 사람들을 질식시켜 죽였다. 소피아 의 모든 구조장비는 무용지물, 추운 바다 날씨가 입수한자를 구조전에 죽였을 테니. 

 

배 선수가 뚫리고 물이 들어온듯 하고, 바람에 파도가 쎄게 치면서 침몰된듯. 

 

Most of the bodies recovered were taken to Juneau, where many of the local citizens volunteered to help identify the remains and prepare them for burial. The bodies had to be scrubbed with gasoline to remove the oil. Teams of women prepared female bodies, and teams of men handled the males. The volunteers were particularly affected by the bodies of the children. Divers at the wreck site recovered about 100 bodies. Many were floating in cabins for months after the wreck.

아마 몇달후 배를 인양한듯. 

 

유가족이 여객선 회사상대로 소송했지만, 패소. 

 

Letters recovered from the lost passengers[edit]

The passengers and crew on Princess Sophia realized their extreme danger. Many wrote letters to loved ones. At least two of these were later recovered. The letter of John R. "Jack" Maskell, found on his body, was widely printed in newspapers at the time:

My own dear sweetheart,
I am writing this my dear girl while the boat is in grave danger. We struck a rock last night which threw many from their berths, women rushed out in their night attire, some were crying, some too weak to move, but the lifeboats were swung out in all readiness but owing to the storm would be madness to launch until there was no hope for the ship. Surrounding ships were notified by wireless and in three hours the first steamer came, but cannot get near owing to the storm raging and the reef which we are on. There are now seven ships near. When the tide went down, two-thirds of the boat was high and dry. We are expecting the lights to go out at any minute, also the fires. The boat might go to pieces, for the force of the waves are terrible, making awful noises on the side of the boat, which has quite a list to port. No one is allowed to sleep, but believe me dear Dorrie it might have been much worse. Just hear there is a big steamer coming. We struck the reef in a terrible snowstorm. There is a big buoy near marking the danger but the captain was to port instead [of] to starboard of [the] buoy. I made my will this morning, leaving everything to you, my own true love and I want you to give £100 to my dear Mother, £100 to my dear Dad, £100 to dear wee Jack, and the balance of my estate (about £300) to you, Dorrie dear. The Eagle Lodge will take care of my remains.
